Most Popular Necktie in 2009

The Tie Our Visitors Loved The Most so Far in 2009

Are you interested to find out what the most popular tie has been so far in 2009? At Cheap Neckties we carry over 1,000 different neckties and bow ties in stock, and we looked through our sales since the first of January 2009 to find out what has been the most popular necktie.

What surprised us a little is that the most popular tie was not one of our $5 necktie selection. No, not even from our $10, or $15 selection. The most popular tie cost $20, which is still an unbelievable low price for a necktie that has been handmade from finest Italian silk.

So, the tie that sold the most is the light blue necktie you see on the left. The tie has a thicker silk inlay which not only gives this tie (and the tie knot) a fuller look, but it also makes the tie drape like a dream. The fine navy blue and white stripes are also not printed on, but were intricately woven into the fabric using a Jacquard weaving technique. To purchase this tie, simply click on the image and add the tie to your shopping cart.

Business Dining Etiquette

Business Dining – Proper Etiquette For Hosting a Business Dinner

Sooner or later most will have the opportunity to host a business dinner. Whether you invite potential clients, investors, business partners, or your boss, knowing the proper etiquette will ensure you make a good impression. This post will tell you the biggest DOs and DONTs in business dining etiquette.

Be on Time
Make sure to show up on time. You want to arrive before your guests. Your guests will appreciate this, and it will leave a good first impression. If you show up with much time to spare, don’t go straight to the bar., but wait at the door for your guests to arrive.

Proper Dress Code
Make sure you know the proper dress code. This does not only mean that you know the dress code of the restaurant. Even more important is having a good understanding of what your guests will be wearing. If your guests are from Europe or Japan chances are high that men will dress in suit and tie, and women in dresses. In doubt it is always better to slightly over-dress than looking too casual. Taking the time to dress up will show your guests that the meeting is important to you.

Make Reservations
There is nothing more embarrassing that not having a reservation made in advance. Having to wait for a table at the bar will most likely leave a bad impression. Even if the restaurant is not busy, having a reservation made, will show your guests that you planned ahead.

Proper Seating & Ordering
Wait for everyone to be seated before you take the seat. Guide you your guests to the table and their seat. Usually your waiter will do this, but pointing out any steps will be appreciated by your guests. Also, pay attention to “Ladies First”. This is also true when it comes to ordering. Women get to order first. If more than one is present then the oldest goes first. The only exception is when it comes to ordering the wine. You are the host and you get to pick a bottle or two from the wine list. Before ordering check with your guests if white or red wine is preferred. In doubt, order both!

Time to Pick up the Bill
If you host, you pay. Before asking for the bill, make sure that your guests are done eating. Also make sure that you have a working credit card. Ideally you have another card as a back-up. Not every restaurant will accept Discover cards for example.

Celebrity Neckties – Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio Wearing Silver Necktie

And once again we came across a well-dressed celebrity that is worth writing about. Leonardo DiCaprio is by many considered a man with a taste for sophisticated style. This picture was taken in Paris during his movie premiere “Body of Lies”. Mr DiCaprio is wearing a 2-button, gray suit, with a subtle window-pane check pattern. The suit is matched with classic white dress shirt and a solid color silver necktie. A perfect combination that is classy, elegant, and stylish. Our Verdict: 9/5 out of 10. Why not a 10? It appears as if the dress shirt’s sleeves are too short. Ideally about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the sleeve collar should be showing.

The necktie appears to be tied with a tightly tied Full Windsor knot. The Windsor has a very triangular ans symmetrical shape that is perfectly suited for medium and wide-spread collar dress shirts. An off-centered dimple on the knot adds a final touch to Mr DiCaprio’s outfit. The dimple gives the solid color tie more structure and adds more shine to the tie -an excellent combination.

The Necktie
At cheap neckties we not only sort our ties by price, but also by pattern, size, and color. We already looked, and we do carry a solid silver tie just like the one worn by Mr DiCaprio in our selection of solid color ties, as well as our assortment of silver neckties. We made it easy for you to find the perfect matching tie and best of all no necktie will cost you more than $20!

How Old is The Necktie

How Old Are Neckties?

To answer this questions, we first have to define what a necktie really is. Some argue that the necktie is over 2,000 years old. Ancient clay sculptures, like the on on the left, that depict Chinese emperors wearing neckties date back to around 221 B.C. It is likely that this early form of necktie was made from silk, since the history of silk dates back to China 4,000 years ago.

Another very common conception to the origin of the necktie dates back to the middle of the 17th century in France. Croatian soldiers that went to France to show support to King Louis during the 30 years war tied the top of their uniforms with scarves that some consider to be the first necktie.

The more modern look of the necktie didn’t come around until about 1850 when the Four in Hand necktie knot was invented. British horsemen wore scares to protect themselves from the colds. They invented a knot that could be tied with one hand while holding the reigns of four horses in the other. The Four in Hand knot is still in popular use today.

After the invention of the modern tie knot, neckties were made thinner and longer. They started to look more like the ties men wear today. They also, once again, had more of a decorative than practical purpose. They were also used as part of mens uniforms. The first uniform tie for example was the necktie of the Oxford’s University Rowing Club in 1880. Soon after, neckties were used to display school colors and military regiments. The so-called regimental ties were born. These striped ties are still very popular today.

Since then, not much has changed in the look of the necktie. Different trends have come and gone out of style. In the 60s for example the skinny tie was popular, and then in the 70s the 4 inch tie was made popular by no other than designer Ralph Lauren. Today neckties measure about 3.25 to 4 inches in width.

Celebrity Fashion: David Beckham Wearing a Skinny Necktie

David Beckham Wearing Solid Black Necktie

He doesn’t just know how to play soccer, but he is also knows how to dress. It is not surprising that Mr Beckham prefers tailored, sportier looking, clothes. When he is not in sweats or soccer shorts you will find him wearing a wide range of styles: From a trendy-casual look of fitted designer jeans and artist label T-shirt, to the contemporary-elegant look of the European cut suit. Where does he get his sense of style? Maybe it is his European heritage. Or maybe it has to do with the fact that he is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham who recently launched her own clothing line called dVb.

After we found this picture of Mr Beckham dressed in a solid gray suit, white dress shirt, and solid color black necktie, we had to write about it. The tie appears to be on the slightly narrower side -as common for European designed neckties. The tie appears to be around 3-3.25 inches in width. It is narrow, but not to be mistaken with the skinny tie first made popular in the late 60s. The skinny tie measures about 2-2.5 inches in width.

How to Wear the Skinny Tie
If Mr Beckham’s look gave you some inspiration to wear a more narrow, solid color tie, then there are a few things you should know. Skinny ties are considered “trendy”, and should be matched with clothes in the same category. Weather you choose to wear the skinny tie with trendy designer jeans and sport coat, or a contemporary 3 button, European cut designer suit, the narrow tie has to be matched with other contemporary clothing items. Besides matching the skinny tie to your other pieces of clothing, make sure it matches your body-type, age, and the occasion. Skinny ties are most commonly worn by younger men with a tall, and/or athletic built. It is less common in traditional business attire.

How to Wear Light Colored Suits

DO’s and DONT’s of Tan Colored Suits

Although the traditional business suits is gray, charcoal, or navy, there are some other suit colors that are very acceptable in business. The light brown, beige, or tan colored suit is one of them. If worn correctly it can be an excellent outfit choice. Before you go out an buy such a suit, there are s few things you should know. This article will teach you to DOs and DON’Ts of wearing light brown suits to the office.

When is it Acceptable to Wear
Light brown and tan suits are meant for good weather in the spring and summer. Wearing a light tan suit on a rainy winter day is a major fashion faux pas. A good rule of thumb is to wait until it is warm enough to leave your overcoat at come. In warm weather light colored suits are not just quite fashionable, but also more comfortable to wear.

How to Match
Light brown, beige and tan suits should be worn with brown belt and matching brown shoes. Black shoes and belt look out of place! Great dress shirt colors are light blues, light pink, and classic white. Darker dress shirts such as maroon, gray, and navy blue are better suited for “Winter Suits”. The type of necktie you wear should also be more of the “summer tie”. Orange ties, coral red, and light blue ties are an excellent choice.

The Right Fabric
Unless you want to look like “Panama Jack” linen is a fabric to avoid. Besides looking non-business like, linen suits are very care intensive. They wrinkle easily and take a longer time to iron. Also to avoid are heavier wool or twill fabrics. Best are lighter and thinner wool fabrics. It will drape much nicer and will also be much more comfortable to wear in warm weather.

Accessorize With Gold & Brown
Other accessories besides your shoes and belt should harmonize with the tan-brownish color. A brown briefcase that closely matches your shoe color is in place. (Here are some helpful tips on how to match your briefcase).

If you like to wear cufflinks, then gold is better suited than silver. Gold and brown are excellent color combination. If you like to shoe more color on the cufflinks then make sure the cufflinks match either your dress shirt or some color found on your necktie.

Time of the Day
Once the sun has set, it is time to switch to darker suits. Light brown, tan, and beige suits are better suited for the daytime in warm weather.

Celebrity Neckties: George Clooney

George Clooney Likes Striped Ties

And once again we found another famous celebrity wearing a necktie. This time George Clooney is showing off a two-tone gray striped tie. The tie is matched with a very fine pin-striped, charcoal gray, 3-button suit, and a classy white dress shirt. An excellent combination of color and pattern. While gray, white, and blacks are always easy to combine, patterns can be a little more tricky. As a general rule you should match different patterns that are different in size. This is done very well in this case. Mr Clooney’s narrow pin-striped suit combines well with the slightly wider stripes on the tie.

The tie knot appears to be a half Windsor knot. The half Windsor is a slightly asymmetrical, and smaller tie knot. It is a perfect knot for shirts with medim or even narrow spread collars. Once again, a good match between the knot choosen and the shirt worn my Mr Clooney. We at cheap neckties give this look a solid 10 out of 10!

John Stewart And His Neckties

And again we are featuring another celebrity’s necktie. This time our eyes were on John Stewart, host of the “Daily Show” on Comedy Central. Like most anchors and TV hosts, Mr Stewart always dresses very professionally in suit and tie. The suits are typically in classic colors like gray of navy blue. You will never see anything too flashy on him. It seems as if it is his wardrobe consultants objective to find an elegant, timeless outfit that will appeal to a wide audience. And they do this quite well!

John Stewart’s Necktie
The outfit Mr Stewart wore just recently was a navy blue suit with a white, light grayish-blue striped dress shirt. This so-called “background base” was then matched with classy striped necktie in navy blue and silver. When combining similar patterns it is important to make sure that the patterns are different in size. This is done very well on his outfit you see here. Although both necktie and shirt are striped, the different widths create a nice balance.

Finally the medium collar spread on his dress shirt is matched with a classic half Windsor tie knot. The knot has a slightly asymmetrical shape – a common characteristic for the half Windsor knot. It is a perfect knot for striped neckties and shirts with a medium collar spread (since it is slightly smaller in size than the larger Full Windsor knot).

Celebrity Neckties – Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise’s Gray Necktie

At Cheap Neckties we are interested in what type of neckties celebrities around the world are wearing. Most of the time our focus is on businessmen, politicians, news anchors, and talk show hosts. In a recent post for example we looked at Mr Steven Colbert’s Necktie. We have also talked about Obama’s and McCains necktie choices on a few occasions during election. This time we found Tom Cruise wearing a necktie during the Valkyrie premiere in Berlin, Germany.

Mr Cruise wore a single button medium-gray suit, white dress shirt, and a beautiful foulard-design necktie. He tied the necktie perfectly with a larger, dimpled Windsor knot. Although the larger tie knot was perfectly matched to a wider spread collar dress shirt, the large knot does look a little funny on Mr Cruise smaller built. In general a necktie knot should be matched to the dress shirt. The wider the dress shirt collar the larger of a tie knot you will need. This is done perfectly in this case. One thing that should also be considered is the tie wearer’s neck size and frame. Larger tie knots look more proportionate on larger necks and heavier built men. Our verdict: If Mr Cruise likes the symmetrical look of the Windsor knot, then we recommend that he ties the knot a little tighter to make it slightly smaller. Another alternative is to choose ties that have a thinner inlay.

Buy This Necktie For $15!
After we saw this tie on Mr Cruise we also looked into our selection of neckties to see if we have one in stock just like the one he was wearing. And we did! We found a medium-gray silk tie with fine white dots – just like the one worn by Tom Cruise. The tie is handmade from pure silk, and best of all, it only costs $15. Celebrity Neckties – Steven Colbert

Neckties You See on TV – Steven Colbert’s Tie

In the past we have occasionally reported interesting necktie patterns and designs worn by famous celebrities. During the election for instance we did a few reports on the wardrobe choices of President Obama and John McCain. As usual our main focus was on their neckties. As common knowledge, both men have wardrobe advisers that are experts in the field of formal and business fashion, making it that much more interesting. By looking at the wardrobe of politicians, News anchors, and TV show hosts you know that the clothes you see were carefully selected by fashion experts without any real spending restriction. Becuase of this we decided to feature more of these stories in this section of our site.

Steven Colbert:
One celebrity we will occasionally cover is Steven Colbert. One of America’s top political comedians, he is also one of the most well dressed men on public television in the US. His suits are perfectly tailored, and the shirt and necktie choice always compliment his color profile.

On the left you see Steven Colbert wearing a navy blue suit that appears to be made from a slightly worsted wool. The heavier fabric is an excellent choice for fall and winter wardrobe (the picture was taken in winter 08). The crisp white shirt is always classy looking with navy, or pretty much any suit color. What is most interesting is his necktie: A yellow and navy tie with horizontal stripes. The navy stripes are a great compliment to his suit, while the lighter yellow shade adds a touch of color that compliment his complexion.
