Dressing Like Mad Men’s Jon Hamm

Get the Look: How to Dress Like Jon Hamm

don-draper-mand-men-fashion-tipsAMC’s “Mad Men” has been one of the most popular shows on television since its inception just a few years ago. Characterized by smart dialogue, complex plots and an exceptional cast, it’s no wonder why the show is so well-loved by the masses. One of the things that truly stands out about the show, however, is the 1960s-era fashion that is so perfectly pulled off by the cast. Indeed, the producers of the show have completely dialed in this look, exemplified by fitted gray suits, crisp collars and other aspects of classic attire. In fact some argue that it was the show Mad Men that brought back the skinny tie and the pocket square.

Jon Hamm (“Mad Men’s” Don Draper) is perhaps the most well-known actor on the show, and he pulls off the ‘60s-inspired look better than anyone. In fact he was recently voted as the 5th Best Dressed Man on TV by StyleForum. While getting this look requires proper preparation (and often expensive designer pieces), there are plenty of things that you can do in order to start taking steps towards Hamm’s style, even if you aren’t used to dressing even remotely like the characters in “Mad Men.”

The “At Work” Look
Jon Hamm effectively embodies two different looks on “Mad Men,” the first of which is often referred to his “at work” look. While he serves as the creative drive in the office, his look is that of a sleek, well-dressed businessman; something that he is quick to make clear throughout the show. Hamm’s “at work” look as Don Draper is characterized by the classic american suit, which found popularity during the era that is portrayed on the show by designers such as Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren. With soft/thick shoulders and a tapered waist, Hamm’s suits create a “v-shaped” illusion that is actually quite slimming and adds height to his appearance. The suits worn on the show are almost never solid in color; rather, they typically are made with threads of a variety of similar colors which, while patterned, actually give off the appearance of being one single color. Hamm rounds out his work attire with slim-notched lapels, wide-striped skinny ties and a classic white pocket square for a timeless, masculine look that is difficult to beat. Also quite common in Hamm’s rotation are fitted gray 3-piece suits – a style that is especially great for the coming Fall and Winter months.

The Casual Look
When Draper isn’t at the office coming up with another brilliant marketing plan, he typically dresses in a casual manner that perfectly balances his more formal look. Starting with the shirt, Hamm’s character is most often seen wearing a crisp, wrinkle-free Polo; most often in blue (both light and dark can be effective). In terms of pants, Draper prefers white trousers, which add a great deal of contrast to this look and match up nicely with his Polos. As with anyone who has a work schedule like Draper’s, however, his accessories remain on the formal side; think black slip-on loafers, black leather belt and thin cotton socks. The watch Draper wears when dressing casually is also important, and should not be overlooked; a rectangular gold watch-face with leather band will be sleek and sophisticated while remaining on the subtle side. This “dressed-down professional look” is perfect for a hot summer day outside of the office, and still looks attractive in the modern world.
