Black Tie: Waistcoat vs. Cummerbund
Are you putting together a black tie outfit and are unsure whether to choose a cummerbund or waistcoat? Then this guide will help you decide. First and foremost, both are equally acceptable. But, a few things may make one more suited than the other. Read below:
The Waistcoat:
The waistcoat is the traditional waist covering for black tie dress. When choosing a waistcoat make sure that it is black or midnight blue in color (to match the jacket) and has lapels that are faced in fabric matching the lapels of the jacket. Waistcoats are available in single and double-breasted style. Which one you choose is a question of personal taste. The formal waistcoat should have a low cut to reveal as much of the decorative shirt as possible.
The Cummerbund:
The cummerbund was introduced to formal black tie attire during the 1930s after British officers brought the formal sash back from India during British Colonialism. Some consider the sash to be less formal but it is by no means unsuited for traditional black tie dress. It is experts’ consensus that the sleek lines of the cummerbund is best suited for tuxedos with a shawl collar. When choosing a cummerbund make sure it is black in color and made from silk or grosgrain (to match the jacket’s lapels). Also, pleats are worn facing up!
