Mens Guide to Pink

Mens Fashion Tips – How to Best Wear Pink

Even with today’s relatively liberal world of men’s fashion, a lot of guys are still leery about wearing pink. This ‘most feminine’ of colors is a challenge for all but the most confident (or least gender-insecure) guys around. But pink, when worn properly, need never be as emasculating as people think. It’s all a matter of good mix-and-matching to bring this classic color back into your fashion palette.

Combine with Neutrals
Fashion is very much like painting: if you want to draw attention to a particular element, diminish the dimensions of all the surrounding elements. It’s the same case with colors; the more muted or neutral the accompanying hues are, the more noticeable a single bold color will be. Neutrals, therefore, will be a big help in your wearing pink effectively.

Black, navy, gray and brown – that is, the classic neutral colors in men’s fashion – should work well with pink tops and accessories. Your selection, however, doesn’t have to be limited to just those. Other neutral colors like white are equally versatile for combining with other colors, but are a lot more daring in terms of fashion points.

One thing you shouldn’t do is the exact opposite – pair pink with other equally bright, equally bold and equally emasculating (at least socially) colors. Not only does this make you look even less macho (emasculation adds up in men’s fashion), but color pairings are also a difficult proposition. You’ll most likely end up looking like a biohazard sign gone wrong when you put too many bright, strong colors together.

Use It Sparingly
Another key factor in pulling off pink fashion pieces successfully is the amount of pink you’re wearing. Even if you end up donning the loudest and most lurid shade of pink you could find in the department stores, it can still look interesting and aesthetically pleasing if there are few other colored items on you to compete with it.

Don’t aim to have an all-pink outfit; you’re aiming to become a stylish, fashion-minded man, not a crayon. Instead, try for accessories or little pops of color in your outfit – pink stripes on your shirt, for example, or a nice solid pink necktie on top of a solid office shirt – so that your outfit becomes more dramatic without as much addition of pink.

This is a good starting point if you’re uncomfortable with the whole idea of wearing pink. Keeping your use of pink minimal means that the look needs less commitment; if you suddenly change your mind halfway, you could easily adjust your outfit.

Keep It Simple
Bright and ‘non-manly’ colors, like pink, are already difficult enough to wear as they are. When you throw prints and intricate patterns into the mix, they become even harder to execute on any kind of outfit. That’s why you want to keep the patterns and designs on the more simple side. Start experimenting by wearing solid colors like a solid pink necktie or pink polo shirt. The rationale behind this strategy is that pink is already an eye-catching element by itself; adding a print will only make your look seem busy without adding much constructive drama to your outfit. By working exclusively with colors (and textures, if you’re feeling brave), you make life easier for you as a whole.

Pink is a bright energetic color that every guy should learn to wear. Learn to wear one ahead of your peers, and you should be making a very bold – and not at all emasculating – fashion statement for everyone to see.
