How to tie a tie: Tying a Prince Albert necktie knot

Are you currently tying a Four in Hand necktie knot, and sometimes wish the knot were a little larger? Then the Prince Albert knot might be the perfect tie knot to tie for you. The Prince Albert knot is quite similar to the FIH tie knot. What makes this tie knot larger is a second wrapping of the wide part of the necktie around the narrow end. For that reason some people call this knot also the “Double Simple tie knot”.

The Prince Albert tie knot is a great knot for thin neckties. If you are currently tying your ties and the knot is too small, then try this type of knot. Shorter men also find liking in this type of knot. If you are currently tying your tie and it hangs too long, then try this type of knot. The second wrapping will take more the tie’s length, making it hang shorter.

Tie knot instructions in tying the Prince Albert necktie knot:

  1. Just like with every tie knot, flip up your shirt collar and place the tie around your neck. Make sure that the wide part of the tie hangs lower than the shorter end. This will ensure that the tie will end at the right length – near the center of your belt buckle.
  2. Take the wide end of the tie and wrap it once around the narrow end. Slightly pull it a little tight.
  3. Repeat step number 2, but don’t pull it tight this time. Instead create a loop that is needed to finish the tie knot.
  4. The final step of the Prince Albert knot is almost identical with the Four in Hand necktie knot. Take the wide end of the tie and pull it through the loop you created in the last step. Then slightly pull it tight, flip down your shirt’s collar, and center the tie knot between your collars. You are done!

Common mistakes when tying a necktie: The Prince Albert tie knot

  1. Problem: The knot doesn’t tighten right. The reason for this is quite simple. Since the Prince Albert tie knot takes two wrappings, the tie needs to be tightened twice. Once after the first wrapping, and then a second time after pulling the wide end of the necktie through the loop created in the second wrapping.
  2. Problem: The first wrapping is visible. Another common problem. Again, make sure to pull the first wrapping tight carefully. This will ensure it stays in shape and will not show through underneath when you finish the tie knot.
