The Art of Wearing Plaid on Ties

Move over stripes and solids! It is time to make some room for a new kid on the block! We are talking about plaid. While not a new pattern by any stretch of the imagination, our designers have done an excellent job to revitalize this century old pattern. Because plaids and checks have become one of the hottest tie patterns for all seasons of 2013, we were inspired to write a fool-proof guide to wearing plaid patterned neckwear.

Scale
Most people would tell you that you can't combine two different plaids, in fact, to them the thought of pairing a plaid tie with a plaid dress shirt is the epitome of a style Faux Pas. While pairing different plaids is tricky, it can be done indeed. The key lies in scale - meaning that as long as you pair different sized plaids you will be OK. Below is a good example of a gingham check shirt combined with a larger scale madras checkered tie.

Season
2013 has seen some very wild plaids in the world of men's neckwear. The so-called madras check, a pattern that was previously mostly found on beachy shirts and shorts, has somehow gained huge popularity among neckwear designers this year - a trend that has been happily embraced by tie wearers across the country. You may want to note however, that no matter how much you enjoy this print, you should pay attention to the season. Avoid these brightly colored plaids in fall and winter. If you miss wearing the loud madras check dangling from your neck, then try a scottish tartan in rich reds, greens, or blues instead.
