Anyone who pays attention to modern men’s fashion likely knows that some of the best-dressed men in the public sphere work and live in Hollywood – a fact that inspired us to take a closer look at men’s fashion found on the movie screens. In particular, we focused our attention on more recent movies and eventually awarded five actors with our “Best Dressed Men” award. One of these characters that caught our attention was Jacob (played by Ryan Gosling) in Crazy, Stupid, Love. After taking a closer look at his range of wardrobe choices we awarded him the bronze medal on our list of the best dressed men in movies.

2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love may not have been the film of the decade, but there’s no getting around the fact that Ryan Gosling’s character Jacob is definitely one of the best-dressed men to be featured in a film in a long while. Indeed, Gosling knows exactly how to portray style and fashion on the screen, as he happens to be quite stylish off-screen as well. The following are just a few reasons why Gosling’s character in Crazy, Stupid, Love is so stylish, and how you might be able to incorporate elements of his style into your own look.

The Perfect Suit
A huge aspect of Gosling’s look in Crazy, Stupid, Love is the fact that he clearly knows how to don a suit and look comfortable in it at the same time. Jacob’s suits were actually designed by Albert Hammond Jr., guitarist for the popular rock band The Strokes in conjunction with Ilaria Urbinati. While the suits featured in the film aren’t completely over-the-top and strange in appearance, they do tend to differ from the norm. For example, they feature a colored lapel buttonhole, which - while many might think it to be trivial - actually helps them stand out from the crowd. They are also double-vented, which lends them a more European feel than what is typically seen in America. Last but not least, Jacob prefers a more “earthy” color palette on his suits. Dark hunter greens and browns are his favorite choices here.

No Need for a Tie
Ties certainly have a time and place, and usually make just about any outfit stand out in ways that might be impossible otherwise. Although we at Cheap-Neckties would love to argue otherwise, it is actually sometimes best to ditch the tie completely, though, which is exactly what Gosling’s character does in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Part of what makes Jacob look so suave is the fact that he opts to not wear a tie with the majority of his extremely fashionable suits. Not only does he leave the tie at home, he actually leaves the second button of his dress shirts open, which gives him a “devil may care” type look, which really adds to his character’s personality. Ditching the tie isn’t always a smart idea, but there’s no getting around the fact that Gosling’s character pulls it off with ease.

Brown Accessories
We already mentioned that Jacob’s wardrobe primarily consists of earthy colored suits, but he doesn’t stop there. He likes to accent his dark chocolate brown and dark hunter-green suits with light beige-brown dress shoes and the complementing belt. Last but not least, we applaud his choice in tortoise sunglasses. Ralph Lauren or Tom Ford you may think? Although the frame shape does remind us a little of these designers, Jacob actually wears shades by a New York based boutique label “Selima Optique”. Do’s and Don’ts for the Modern Man
There are a variety of things that the modern man can take away from how Gosling’s character dresses. One of the biggest points that the film makes is how effective a custom-tailored suit can be. Gosling’s suits are extremely attractive, and it comes from the fact that they were tailored specifically to his body. Ditching the tie every here and there can also be effective, and is more than worth experimenting with for casual events. Last but not least, pay attention to your accessories. Choose high end footwear in contrasting colors, and bring out a pair of stylish shades the moment the sun comes out.
