Tips to Match a Tux to a Prom Dress

If you want to impress your date on your prom night, then you might want to learn a few basics about matching your tux to your date’s dress. As a guy you actually have it much easier to find a right fitting tux. The selection is much less confusing, the colors on your outfit are much easier to combine, many tuxedo rental places will carry a large assortment of styles and offer additional advice, and finding the right fit is typically no problem either. Your date on the other hand has it much more difficult and it is not uncommon for her to start looking for a dress weeks in advance. Even if you think that picking the right tux is a no-brainer, there are a few basics things you need to know about combining colors to find the perfect matching outfit to your date’s dress. Follow the 5 steps below, and your date will be impressed!

  1. Wait until your date has bought her dress first. The range of colors and styles in prom dresses is much greater and knowing what she is going to wear is a must to find your perfect matching tuxedo. Ask her about her dress! She spend much time in planning for her big night and she will guaranteed love to talk to you about the dress she picked. It shows that you care, and that you take initiative as well to guarantee a great night for both of you.
  2. Now, that you have a very good idea about her dress, contact your local tuxedo rental places. Ask them if they specialize in matching tuxedos to prom dresses. If their answer is yes then you will be in good hands.
  3. Ask your date if she wants to come along when shopping for your tuxedo. Chances are she will love the opportunity to dress her man. Have her bring the dress along with her to help find the perfect tux for you. She might not want to bring the dress since there is the chance it might get dirty and/or wrinkled. This is completely understandable, and if this is the case take a picture and bring it with you.
  4. The best way to match a dress is with the accessories. The tuxedo should be classic black and your dress shirt must be white. This is the basic for elegant black tie, and the gentlemen’s look you might know from James Bond. The cummerbund or vest, and the bow tie are the most elegant way to match your date’s dress. Make sure that you can find the right color match. Just knowing that the dress is blue is not enough. There are dozens of shades of blue ranging from a dark navy blue to a light powder blue. Knowing the exact color shade is key.
  5. If you can’t find the right colors for your bow tie, vest or cummerbund, then go with classic black! In fact, in traditional black tie attire, the gentlemen always wear a black bow tie with his tuxedo regardless of what color his date wears. Black is the most formal color that will guaranteed match with anything she will be wearing. It is called “black tie attire” for a reason after all.
