George in a Single Man Fashion – Style Tips from the Movie a Single Man

2nd Best Dressed Man in Film: George in “A Single Man”

a-single-man-fashion-tom-fordThere are a variety of reasons why one could call Tom Ford’s A Single Man one of the top films of the past decade. Not only did each cast member turn in an extremely good performance, but the script is among the best to be written in many years. One of the greatest reasons why the film is so effective has to do with the fact that the appearance of the characters and the look of the set design is very unique and attention-grabbing. In other words, you can tell that a fashion designer, Tom Ford, produced and directed the film. But instead of using the film as a marketing tool for his own clothing line, Ford consulted with the same production team responsible for creating the sets on the popular TV show “Mad Men”. The result: Impeccable fashion and wardrobe choices that is true to the 1960s era.

Colin Firth’s character George Falconer is a perfect example of the attention to detail Tom Ford put into creating this persona. His suits fit perfectly, their colors compliment the wearer’s color profile and at the same time are true to the fashion era of the 1960s, and the signature glasses were not just trendy in the 1960s but are once again a style that found its way back into the collections of many frame designers. In other words, George is one of the best dressed Film characters to ever hit the screens, and we place him on #2 of our Best Dressed Film Character list.

Slim-Fitting Suits
Just one look at George’s appearance is all it takes to realize that a great deal of his look comes from the slim-fitting suits he wears. Indeed, George’s suits are about as slim as they get, and frame his figure in a way that simply cannot be achieved with boxy cuts. The well-tailored nature of George’s suits are exactly what modern men should be going for, as the wider cuts of the past have fallen out of fashion to an extent over the course of the past few years. While George wears a variety of different colored suits throughout the film, he tends to stick to earthy browns as far as color schemes go, adding subtle contrast with a small white pocket square. The result is a look that is not only professional in nature, but rather attention-grabbing as well. In case you wondered, the suit George wears was designed by Tom Ford and created in his Italian factory (and not in London’s Saville Row as suggested in the movie).

The Right Accessories
Accessorizing is of the utmost importance, and should never be overlooked. Colin Firth’s character clearly knows exactly how to accessorize, which lends a great deal to George’s look. For one, he sticks to skinny ties that tend to be solid in color; subtle, earthy browns that match the slim fit and narrow lapeled suits, and tied with a complementing four in hand knot. Perhaps the most important accessory shown throughout the film, however, is George’s signature pair of glasses; black, thick-framed spectacles that give the character his very own look and feel. Another Tom Ford design you may guess? Although Tom Ford’s frames share similar features, the actual pair worn by George is made by Ralph Lauren (design: 2043 in black). Rumor has it that Colin Firth was the one that picked them out.

Last but not least on the accessory list is the pocket square. It equally adds to the characters look, serving as a subtle accessory that a lot of people forget about when putting together an outfit. Our tip: Add a few pocket squares to your wardrobe. You will be surprised how far these inexpensive accessories can elevate your own style.

Do’s and Dont’s for the Modern Man
Modern men should take a few cues from Colin Firth’s character. For one, his suits are very well-tailored, which make for a slim appearance that simply cannot be achieved otherwise. Slim suits are modern and streamlined, and are preferable over old, boxy varieties (especially for slim and lean body types). One should also always consider accessories in order to look their best; the right tie and pocket square can make all the difference in the world for an ensemble. If you choose to embrace the same style of glasses as George, however, you should consider your face shape first.
