Choosing a Perfect Job Interview Tie

How to Choose a “Winning” Tie for Your Job Interview

job-interview-mens-tiesAre you getting ready for a job interview and don’t know what tie to wear? Should you choose something bright and flashy or rather conservative and/or even boring? Below are three tips that will help you decide on the perfect job interview necktie.

#1 The Job & Industry
In most cases a suit and tie is the preferred dress for a job interview. Especially whtie collar jobs should be applied for in the appropriate business attire. Best are classic suits in charcoal and navy, timeless white dress shirts, and a traditional solid or striped tie. Before you pick out this universal interview uniform however think about the job as well as the industry you are applying for. Are you applying for a graphics design job at a small start-up firm? Then maybe the “stuffy” look of suit and tie might not make the best impression. Instead choose a trendy skinny tie, slim fitting black dress shirt, designer jeans, chucks, and sports coat jacket or even V-neck sweater. In doubt it is always advisable to slightly overdress then being too casual.

#2 Seniority
Another important factor influencing the formality of your attire is the job position and/or title you are applying for. Senior level jobs are typically more conservative and should be greeted with a more serious (aka suit & tie) attire. Entry level jobs on the other hand can be both dressy as well as casual-business – depending on the industry. Finally, it matters whether you are interviewing within your firm or are interviewing at a new company. If you are applying for a job within your existing firm then you may have a bit more leeway in your dress. Chances are good that you have a better understanding of the companies culture and can pick your ensemble accordingly.

#3 Colors & Patterns
Did you decide on classic suit and tie? Then choose a necktie that sets a contrast to the white shirt and classic dark suit but at the same time is not too overpowering. Remember: You do not want to make a fashion statement! Best are maroon, burgundy, and cherry red ties as well as classic navy-blue neckties. Avid bright colors such as bright reds and greens. Also avid trendy colors such as pink, bright yellows, and pastel tones. Keep you ensemble simple, classic and timelessly elegant.
