Tweed features a soft, open texture that was traditionally used by the upper and middle class in the Edwardian period for outdoor leisure activities, like hunting and golfing. Tweeds popularity has withstood the centuries, and today it’s association with Sherlock Holmes as portrayed on the hit television series by Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as hipsters’ vintage sensibilities and the annual Tweed Run in London have brought the classic fabric to a contemporary light. Check out these inventive ways men are wearing tweed.

Commuter Wear for the Workday Warrior

Ah, autumn. The wind whistles and falling leaves tap against your window as you snore in harmony with the melody of the new season – that is until your alarm clock goes off. Once you’re out of bed, you throw on yesterday’s suit and a crumpled necktie. An obstacle course of leaf mounds, pummeling wind, and pumpkin latte guzzling pedestrians await to make your work commute a harvest-time hell.

We here at Cheap Necktie’s San Francisco office know the struggle well. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of commuter friendly work wear to keep you looking fresh once you hit the office. What kind of commuter are you?

The Art of Wearing Plaid on Ties

plaid-neckties-fall-2013

Move over stripes and solids! It is time to make some room for a new kid on the block! We are talking about plaid. While not a new pattern by any stretch of the imagination, our designers have done an excellent job to revitalize this century old pattern. Because plaids and checks have become one of the hottest tie patterns for all seasons of 2013, we were inspired to write a fool-proof guide to wearing plaid patterned neckwear.

Scale
Most people would tell you that you can’t combine two different plaids, in fact, to them the thought of pairing a plaid tie with a plaid dress shirt is the epitome of a style Faux Pas. While pairing different plaids is tricky, it can be done indeed. The key lies in scale – meaning that as long as you pair different sized plaids you will be OK. Below is a good example of a gingham check shirt combined with a larger scale madras checkered tie.

gingham-shirt-madras-check-necktiePicture found at: http://eightinhand.tumblr.com/

Season
2013 has seen some very wild plaids in the world of men’s neckwear. The so-called madras check, a pattern that was previously mostly found on beachy shirts and shorts, has somehow gained huge popularity among neckwear designers this year – a trend that has been happily embraced by tie wearers across the country. You may want to note however, that no matter how much you enjoy this print, you should pay attention to the season. Avoid these brightly colored plaids in fall and winter. If you miss wearing the loud madras check dangling from your neck, then try a scottish tartan in rich reds, greens, or blues instead.

summer-madras-check-bow-tieThe combination of bright colors, madras check, and cotton fabric create the ultimate warm weather accessory. Perfect for summer, but avoid-worthy in fall and winter.

Not ready to give up plaid during fall and winter? Then stick to more muted colors and a more subtle contrast. This Glen-check patterned tie in blues and grays would be perfect.

Four Unique Ways to Wear Your Neckties

Necktie Style Tips: Four Trendy New Ways to Wear Your Neckties

For those of you who are getting a bit bored with the some-old suit and tie look, we at Cheap-Neckties put together some tie styling tips that will instantly re-fresh your wardrobe. From unique necktie knots to particular tie accessories, the tips below will add new flair to your everyday suit and tie rotation. Try these for yourself and we guarantee that you will receive plenty of compliments along the way.

Unique Tie Knots

eldredge-necktie-knot

Did you know that there are 188 ways to tie a necktie? In other words, there are many exotic tie knot choices that will not only look different from your usual Four in Hand or Windsor, but they will also add new style to your business wardrobe. In fact, it is the tie knot that is one of the most visible and most noticeable details when wearing a suit and tie. The long vertical line of the necktie directs the attention up towards the knot. Also, because the knot is so close to one’s face, it is instantly noticeable. That’s why a perfectly tied tie is so important.
Few of these exotic tie knots are known as the Eldredge knot (see video instructions below), the Oriental knot, as well as the Kelvin knot. For those looking for a very “different” looking knot, the Eldredge is perfect. Because it is a trendy knot, it is best worn with a more casual wardrobe (plaid shirts, novelty tie bars, etc).

Tie Bars & Clips

Ever since men started wearing neckties, have we been looking for ways to keep our ties attached to our shirts. As a result, accessories such as tie pins, tie chains, and tie bars as well as tie clips were invented. While pins and chains are less common these days, tie bars and clips have become quite popular as of recently. When wearing a tie bar/clip make sure that the color, width, and design matches your necktie and the rest of our outfit. Looking for something unique? Then colored tie bars as well as novelty tie bars can be perfect.

Collar Bars

While tie bars have almost become “mainstream” again, it is the collar bar that is a fashion accessory that has just very recently resurged onto the scene. Celebrities such as Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling have already been spotted wearing them, a clear sign that these are pieces worth paying attention to. Our tip: Pair the collar bar with a solid knitted skinny tie.

Tugged Away Ties

By “tugged away” we are referring to a look where only a top few inches of the tie is visible. This means pairing your tie with a V-neck sweater, cardigan, or vest. Because only the top few inches of the tie is visible, it is even more important to pay attention to the perfectly looking tie knot. What is less important is that the tie is tied to the right length (since the tip of the tie is not visible anyway).
