Summer Fashion Lessons: John Paul Gaultier
Fashion in the summer always means fun and fresh styles, even for the relatively rule-bound world of men. When it comes to ‘fun’ and ‘fresh’, few designers come any fresher or more fun than John Paul Gaultier. Once the enfant terrible of the design world, he has become iconic for his shocking outfits and revolutionary ideas. Shock value is one of the many things that Gaultier has mastered, which is why so many of his runway shows are dramatic and controversial. You can use that philosophy, to a certain extent, to make this summer just as dramatic and memorable as a JPG show.
Colorful summer outfits are hardly revolutionary; every other designer and brand on the market does it for the season. Gaultier, however, reinvents the tradition by hiding colors in the drabbest and most neutral of outfits. The contrast amplifies the color – a mandarin orange, in this collection’s case – into an explosion, whereas other designers would have left it as merely a pop of something lively.
You can translate this into your own clothes by assembling a completely neutral outfit and then adding or subbing in just one piece in a very bright color. It’s a handy trick; a lot of men find it difficult to balance a bright color. You get to wear the kind of bright shades that summer allows, while making sure that you don’t look anywhere near a crayon.
Master of Monochrome
Winter trends aren’t entirely eradicated by the arrival of warmer days. In fact, there are a few that regularly cross the season boundaries, making them good for the whole year. Monochrome is one such trend that has so far refused to die out.
You have to admit that wearing black and white will be effective for setting your clothes apart from the colorfully dressed masses. The restrictive palette is a fashion challenge, to be sure, but it carries great rewards for the man who can conquer it. Gaultier uses not-so-classic pieces to tackle the challenge in one of the most classic of ways.
Contrast piping and lining will most probably be difficult to find beyond the walls of a Gaultier shop, but you should pay close attention to the philosophy behind it. Gaultier used one color as a base for almost the entire outfit, and then put in small doses of the other neutral. You could get an original JPG contrast piping coat, or you could simply use contrasting accessories like a necktie, belt or pair of shoes to make the statement for you.
Once you tire of monochrome, it doesn’t take much to mix up this trend with the previous one. Simply throw in one or two bright, colorful pieces and you have an outfit that’s one part shocking but equally stylish.
High and Low
A large part of Gaultier’s fame in the late 80’s and early 90’s came from his eagerness to mix high fashion with ‘low’ streetwear – something that other designers have only begun doing recently. It’s a tradition that he continues to this day, and one that’s sartorially suitable for summer.
He mixes them pretty well, too. Not everyone could think of pairing something yuppie like a plain shirt under a razor slim tie with trousers cut like gym pants. A similar pair of track pants rounded off another outfit involving formal-ish blazer and scoop-neck tee. He has also picked up that great GQ-esque tradition of wearing low-cut sneakers with just about everything – including full suits.
One of the great things about mixing these things is that there’s a lot of room to interpret and not a lot of rules to follow. Just remember that your goal is to have some pieces bring out a strong contrast in another. Always keep an eye out for balance in terms of color, fit, cut and styling, just like JPG himself would do.
