Lance Armstrong's Tie on Larry King

It has almost been three years since Lance Armstrong appeared on Larry King Live. Since then Lance has come out of retirement and has swapped the suit & tie back for a tight fitting aerodynamic spandex suit. We came across this picture from 2007 and thought that it is a great illustration on how - or should we say how-not-to - dress according to your body type. Lance's 5 foot 9 and 165 lbs frame might be perfect for flying uphill in the French Alps but it is too small of a frame to wear a 4 inch width tie that is tied with a humongous double Windsor knot. A necktie should add intricate detail and character to a shirt and suit but it should never draw all the attention to it and distract from the wearer's face - as it does in Lance's outfit.

Everything else on the outfit is well chosen. The charcoal suit and light blue dress shirt create a nice canvas for the light yellow necktie, which appears to be Lance's favorite color after winning the yellow jersey seven times in a row. What we would have done differently: wearing a thinner necktie that has a width of 3.25 - 2.5 inches as well as tying a slightly smaller tie knot such as the Four in Hand or the half Windsor knot.

Ryan Seacrest wearing Skinny Tie

Celebrities are almost expected to dress in slightly unusual ways. While some abandon the classic black tie look required at formal outings, others have their own interpretation of this formal dress code. Ryan Seacrest for example created a look that is elegant and trendy. It is a look that true 'black tie aficionados' might despise, but for the fashion forward thinking man it is an outfit that still has the elegance needed for classic black tie.

The first thing that stands out is the satin dinner jacket with a silk shawl lapel. It is a jacket that is formal and elegant, but too modern for the classic black bow tie. Therefore, Mr Seacrest opted for a skinny black tie instead - the perfect accessory to the jacket. One thing that we are not to fond of is the dress shirt he chose. It appears as if the shirt as a pleated front - a formal look, that in our opinion, clashes with the trendy and sporty jacket and tie combination.

Will Smith Wearing Check Pattern Necktie

Occasionally we at Cheap-Necktie.com write about the latest celebrity fashion. This time our attention was grabbed by an outfit worn by Mr Will Smith. During the Wiesenthal Center's annual National Tribute Dinner Mr Smith chose to wear a charcoal gray suit with very subtle striped pattern. The suit has a classic 2-button cut and is paired with a light gray dress shirt that has a contrasting white collar and cuff. What makes this outfit unique is the tie Mr Smith chose. The tie combines the colors navy, gray, light blue, and beige with one contemporary checkered pattern.




As always we looked through our collection of ties to find the closest match to the tie Mr Smith was wearing, and we were successful in our search. The tie pictured on the left has an almost identical checkered pattern and has a very similar color combination. Bradley Cooper Wearing a 3-Piece Suit on "The Late Show"

TV and Movie start Bradley Cooper was spotted wearing a 3-Piece suit on Letterman's "Late Show" earlier this month. We at Cheap-Neckties enjoy to pick celebrities and then criticize as much as compliment on their outfits. Overall we were very impressed with Cooper's ensemble. It is classic and elegant, and at the same time relaxed and cool - perfect for his "bad boy womanizer" image.

The solid charcoal suit gives the ensemble formal framing. The excellent shine of the fabric is immediately noticeable and we suspect that the suit is made from super-160s wool, or higher. In case you are unfamiliar with this, the number reflects how fine the wool is. The higher the number the finer the individual wool thread. Fabrics with a higher number have more shine and are softer, but also tend to wrinkle more easily and are more delicate. For business we suggest to wear suits of super-100 or super-120 wool. Higher counts are best for one time appearances, formal dinners, speeches, or, as chosen by Mr Cooper, for TV appearances. Cooper's suit has a modern European cut. It is tapered at the waist, has a 3-button single-breasted front, and has a slightly peaked lapel style.

Instead of wearing a solid white dress shirt, Cooper opted for a light periwinkle blue. It creates a softer contrast to the dark gray suit which is perfect for Cooper's lighter complexion. The shirt has a medium collar spread, and the unbuttoned top creates a more relaxed and cool look. Finally there is the tie itself. The charcoal gray, solid color tie is a perfect match to the suit. It is elegant, modern, and stylish. To add to the relaxed look, Cooper decided to tie a slightly loose four in hand knot tie knot. Even though we are very pleased with Mr Cooper's ensemble we always find ways to improve the outfit. One thing worth mentioning is the cuff length on jacket and shirt. It appears that the cuffs on the jacket are a touch too short. We would like to see about 1/8 - 1/4 inch of dress shirt cuff when the arms hang straight down. Also worth noting is the tie knot. Our suggestion is to add a dimple into the knot. It adds a more textured look to the tie, gives the tie a better drape, and also helps reflect light for a brilliant shine. Finally, there is the vest. It appears that the vest is just a touch to snug. A too tightly fitted vest not only can be uncomfortable but it also causes the dress shirt to wrinkle in the chest area.

Ryan Philippe in Suit and Tie

In this month's edition of our male celebrity fashion update we found a picture of Ryan Philiippe dressed in suit and tie. Him and his wife, Reese Witherspoon, were spotted on Philippe's screening of the film "Flags of Our Fathers". Mr Philippe is dressed in a well tailored charcoal gray suit, striped dress shirt, and solid light blue necktie. The suit appears to have a pin striped pattern, but a closer look suggests that it is more of a subtle herringbone pattern than actual pin stripes. Mr Philippe chose a sportier 3 button jacket that he paired with a light blue and white striped dress shirt. A perfect addition is the solid Light Blue Silk Tie that he wears with a loosely tied Four in Hand Knot and a unbuttoned dress shirt. Overall we are quite pleased with the look. The outfit combines different patterns and uses classic elegant colors. As a minor suggestion we would recommended a solid white pocket square that is folded using the more elegant flat fold, or also known as Presidential pocket square fold.

After over a month of no update on celebrities wearing neckties we went out to search for some unusual pictures with celebs dressed with a tie. This time our search found R & B singer Chris Brown dressed in jeans, sports coat, un-tugged dress shirt, white sneakers, and a skinny bright-blue solid color tie. It is quite obvious that a trendy, stylish, and slightly out of the ordinary look was Brown's objective. Tom Brady Wearing Black Suit and Tie

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady swapped jersey and pads for an elegant black suit and black tie. Everything about his outfit is truly classic and elegant, and a perfect match for an East-coast quarterback. His suit appears to be made out of velvet. Typically this softer and shiny fabric is ony found on lapels on formal suits and tuxedos, but this suit seems to be made completely out of this fabric. Chances are that the pants are made out of finest black cotton or cotton-silk blend with a velvet stripe on the outer seam to compliment the fabric on the suit. The tie is solid black or dark charcoal in color and is a simple yet classic match to the suit and white dress shirt. Overall we like the uncomplicated, yet very elegant style of his outfit. Twilight Star Robert Pattinson in D & G Designer Tux

At Cheap-Neckties.com we always keep an eye out for current fashion trends and fads, and we often times look at what celebrities are wearing on, and off the red carpet. Recently we spotted a picture of actor Robert Pattinson wearing quite a unique tuxedo and skinny black tie. The jacket is solid black in color and appears to be made out of velvet. The shawl collar is a perfect match to the fabric and the tapered cut. The jacket is accessorized with a classic white, pointed-collar, dress shirt and a solid black skinny tie.

Although we at Cheap-Neckties appreciate new trends, styles, and designs, we are a little uncertain about the outfit. It is clearly a designer jacket that, although stylish, is quite far removed from traditional black tie attire. The outfit does have a sporty feel to it which does compliment Mr Pattinson's age and body type.

Brad Pitt Wearing Gray Suit and Tie

Celebrities don't have it easy. Paparazzi are always on the hunt for the next shocking picture that sometimes puts even the most confident celebrity to shame. It is not surprising that many pay particular attention to what they are wearing. Recently, Brad Pitt was spotted wearing a gray suit and tie outfit at a movie premiere in Germany.

Brad Pitts Outfit:
Brad Pitt was spotted wearing a gray suit with a very fine Prince of Whales check pattern. The three button suit jacket and the pleat-less, flat-front pants perfectly compliment his athletic built. His necktie appears to be a gray tie with a very intricate bird's eye check pattern. The overall outfit has a some-what relaxed and casual feel to it which is mostly due to having the necktie tied slightly loose, having the top dress shirt button left open, and by wearing no belt with the pants. A solid silver pocket square adds the final touch to this casual-trendy, yet elegant outfit.

Although we were quite impressed with his outfit, especially with the way Mr Pitt turned a "business suit" into a much more trendy outfit, we were a little uncertain about the color choice given the time of the year. His overall outfit would be perfect for the spring and summer. The picture was taken in Germany during the month of February - which would still be considered "winter fashion". Nevertheless we were impressed with his personal style that he added, and the way different fabric patterns were combined into one outfit.

Country Star Brad Paisley wears a Paisley Pattern Tie

When you hear Brad Paisley you probably think country music and not neckties. Although his traditional outfit is the button-up shirt, jeans, and cowboy hat, we found him wearing a necktie during the Country Music Awards earlier this year. To our surprise he was not wearing the typical Texas tie, called Bolo tie, but an actual silk necktie. To honor his name he picked a black tie with a reddish paisley pattern.

The Paisley pattern is as foreign to country-wear as Baseball hats are to black tie functions. The Paisley pattern originated in India during the 16th century. It originally represents the shoots of a young date palm tree, and is a symbol for fertility and health in ancient Babylonia. For mens ties, paisly patterns have gained much popularity in the 1960s. Today smaller paisleys that look almost like little polka dots from the distance are most popular on neckties.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wearing Silver Necktie

And once again we came across a well-dressed celebrity that is worth writing about. Leonardo DiCaprio is by many considered a man with a taste for sophisticated style. This picture was taken in Paris during his movie premiere "Body of Lies". Mr DiCaprio is wearing a 2-button, gray suit, with a subtle window-pane check pattern. The suit is matched with classic white dress shirt and a solid color silver necktie. A perfect combination that is classy, elegant, and stylish. Our Verdict: 9/5 out of 10. Why not a 10? It appears as if the dress shirt's sleeves are too short. Ideally about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the sleeve collar should be showing.

The necktie appears to be tied with a tightly tied Full Windsor knot. The Windsor has a very triangular ans symmetrical shape that is perfectly suited for medium and wide-spread collar dress shirts. An off-centered dimple on the knot adds a final touch to Mr DiCaprio's outfit. The dimple gives the solid color tie more structure and adds more shine to the tie -an excellent combination.
