John Slattery from Mad Men Voted 8th Best Dressed Man on TV

Mad Men’s John Slattery is Voted 8th Best Dressed Man on TV

john-slattery-fashion-adviceMad Men is not only one of the most successful shows to ever hit television, but happens to be home to some of the most well-dressed characters on the tube these days. A lot of attention falls onto John Hamm’s character Don Draper who was voted into 5th place on our Top20 Best Dressed Men on TV list. While Mr Draper certainly receives lots of deserved attention for his wardrobe choices, it’s safe to say that just about everyone on the show is dressed in a way that is difficult to beat. Indeed, John Slattery (played by the inimitable Roger Sterling) is just as dapper as Don Draper, although perhaps in a few different ways that set the two characters apart. Those who find themselves working in the professional sector can get quite a bit out of dressing like the character John Slattery, and it’s not nearly as difficult to do so as many people think. So long as you consider the following tips, you’ll be well on your way towards looking more like Slattery.

Go with a Tight-Fitting Suit
One of the major differences between John Slattery and Don Draper is that the suits that Slattery wears tend to be of a much tighter-fit than those of his counterpart. Slattery very often embraces the single-breasted grey suit with vest, which has become a trademark characteristic of his appearance on the show. These outfits are stark, to say the least; a lot of buttons, a lot of cloth. Because of their fit, however, they tend to look exceptionally neat and clean; something that would be impossible if they featured a boxy fit. It cannot be emphasized enough, then, how important it is to have a good tailor on your side if you’re looking to embrace this look. The more well-tailored your suits are, the better you’re likely to look regardless of what situation you are dressing for. Oh, and don’t forget to make sure the suits you wear feature peaked lapels, as this is another trademark of Slattery’s look.

Break Things Up with Color
Slattery’s suits are certainly elegant, but a lot of people might also term them as being somewhat “busy” in appearance. While toning this down isn’t always easy, there are a variety of things that you can do in order to add balance to an ensemble like this. One of the most effective techniques is to break things up with color; a colorful tie, for example will look great when set up against even the busiest of grey suits. Strive to choose skinny ties if you’re looking to take the Slattery route, as the ties he wears on the show tend to be about as skinny as one could ever imagine.

Don’t Neglect the White Dress Shirt
Pay close attention to the characters on Mad Men, and you’re likely to notice that just about all of them tend to wear white dress shirts. The white dress shirt is clean and stark, and can make any suit/tie combination “pop” in ways that it might not otherwise. It should be noted that white dress shirts were business standard during the era that the show is set in, and although things have loosened up quite a bit since then, you can still get a lot out of this versatile piece. Think that the white dress shirt is too plain? Then consider white dress shirts made from different fabric weaves, with different collar style, different cuff options (Slattery almost always chooses a french cuffed shirt), pocket or no-pocket style, slim fit vs. regular cut, and many more subtle variations.
