The NBC television show, The Office gave audiences a new wave of iconic characters that has helped shape the last decade of American comedy. Viewers grew to love the awkward, unique, and often maddening characters which if we’re honest with ourselves, we all relate to in some way.

In light of Halloween 2017 coming up, we found costume ideas for three of our favorite Office characters: Michael Scott, Jim Halpert, and Dwight Schrute. Similar to a typical office setting, each character regularly wore a suit and tie through the duration of the show. To pull off each of these characters, the standout qualities will be found in the details and personalities. Check out our costume ideas for these popular comedy characters!

Michael Scott

Michael Scott can be characterized as both the best and worst boss in one. His kindness, generosity, and love for birthday celebrations make him a unique find. While his unquenchable desire for best friendship, inappropriate manners, and lack of secret-keeping skills make his a terrible boss. A true Office show lover will remember the episode where Michael has to negotiate an employee, Darryl’s contract. Michael has been avoiding these conversations for some time and was practicing negotiation tactics in order to be prepared to say, no. During these conversations, Darryl exposes that Michael was wearing a “ladies’ suit”. Unknowingly, Michael had picked a women’s suit from the bargain bin, probably from Burlington Coat Factory. This look includes a women’s suit, necktie, and Michael’s iconic “World’s Best Boss” mug.

Jim Halpert

Jim Halpert is the office prankster who has the hots for the receptionist, Pam Beasley. His laid-back demeanor but witty and sarcastic tone makes him a fan favorite. Through the seasons, Jim’s style moves from a sloppy combination of baggy shirt and trousers to a modern fitting professional attire. His go-to look was a light blue dress shirt, charcoal trousers, and solid dark necktie. In honor of Halloween, we chose one of Jim’s Halloween costumes within the show. In this episode, Jim simply dresses up as “Dave” by using a name tag. In order to make this impression a success, don’t forget a Jim smirk!

Dwight K. Schrute

Dwight Schrute Halloween Costume

The Assistant to the Regional Manager, Dwight Schrute is a volunteer fire deputy, beet farmer, Battlestar Galactica buff and overall quirky guy. Motivated by getting Jim Halpert fired and becoming the next Regional Manager, Dwight is always looking for ways to get ahead. His everyday attire wasn’t difficult to construct. By staying within the olive green, khaki, brown, and mustard yellow color schemes, anyone can pull off Dwight Schrute look. We found an khaki green suit, mustard dress shirt, and copper and brown necktie. The details will bring this outfit to life. Make sure to include a pair of eyeglasses, belt phone case, nunchucks (just in case), and parted hair down the middle.

This can be difficult when the people elected can’t choose the right shoes to go with their outfit or look like they belong in a pub rather than the Oval Office. We’ve combed through our tireless politicians to find those with the worst lean towards fashion and taste. Presenting, our list of Top 5 Worst Dressed Politicians.

Steve Bannon - Worst Dressed Politicians

#5 – Making his home at number five on our list, Steve Bannon is a sloppy, drama-ridden political adviser who looks like he’s always up to something mischievous. Should one not be abreast with Bannon’s reputation and happen to run into him on the street, they might be astounded to find he is currently one of the most important men in America. A similar looking figure might also be found at your local bar slumped in the back booth. Bannon is often seen wearing bedraggled suits with one, two, and, oh yes, sometimes three shirts underneath. These layered shirts recurrently happen to be collared, which clearly begs the question – why? His careless attempt to appear professional makes it even more surprising that he has achieved such influence. It is possible he’s decided to throw the middle finger to the collective “Man” through his disdain for appearing presentable, but that’s just our guess.

Jim Justice - Worst Dressed Politicians

#4 – Slipping into fourth place of Worst Dressed Politicians is West Virginia’s new Governor, Jim Justice. Coined as West Virginia’s only billionaire, Justice’s coal business single-handedly financed his entire campaign leading up to his election for 2017. One would imagine that with funds such as these he would be able to afford a good tailor. It’s no secret that Justice is a big and tall man, and generally people of his build find ways to size down appearance instead of enhance. He must have his own interpretations about fashion because his suit jackets exhibit traits of a poncho more than anything else. His jacket arms go far past his wrists and maybe needs told “off the shoulder jackets” aren’t a thing. To add insult to injury, crocs…CROCS! There is a line between clothes being poorly fitted and just ridiculous and Justice has stepped over. In this occasion, bigger is not better.

Jimmy McMillan - Worst Dressed Politicians

#3 – High kicking his way to the number three spot on our Worst Dressed Politician list is to Jimmy McMillan III. He gained recognition by becoming a political activist and recurring candidate from the “Rent Is Too Damn High” party, formed by himself. Part of his popularity likely derived from his wild sense of style and animated personality that spawned on copycats. His facial hair is a hybrid of handlebars, mutton chops, and goatee not to mention his mullet. Known for sporting a suit and tie without the collared shirt and adding in the never-essential-everyday-gloves. In our book that makes McMillan eligible for making the top three on our Worst Dressed Politicians list.

Rand Paul - Worst Dressed Politicians

#2 – Second place on our list belongs to non other than Senator Rand Paul. He seems like a nice guy all around, but maybe has been in the hills of Kentucky a tad too long and forgot how to match his clothes. With a knack for interesting – and atrocious – wardrobe pairings, Paul has made a habit of attending public appearances with nonsensical outfits. We tend to tip our hats to anyone who goes through medical school, unfortunately we have to condemn wearing scrubs anywhere outside of the hospital or healthcare location. His outfit most recognition-worthy is an interestingly terrible combination of plaid shorts, black blazer, and shoes he pulled from the back of his closet. We’re not sure whether he thought he was going golfing, a hike, or to the office. Maybe he planned to do all three and thought a compromise was worth the risk of looking ridiculous. Think again, Paul.

Donald Trump - Worst Dressed Politicians

#1 – Coming in at first place of the Worst Dressed Politicians is President Donald J. Trump. Not a shocker to most of America, since taking office Mr. Trump has been accosted for his poor style in spite of being one of the wealthiest people in the United States and known for tweeting out flaws (fashion included) of others. Trump has infamously used scotch tape to fasten the back of his tie from taking flight, or for whatever reason we’re still not quite sure. For an issue that haunts Trump so fiercely, one would imagine he would have solved the back of the necktie controversy within his first 100 days. If anything he should have used the tape to shorten his outlandishly long necktie. His suits are always too big, and of course his bizarre hair and face just make him look like a playboy wannabe. In conclusion, Mr. President “Trumps” all others in his lack of self awareness and style.

Aziz Ansari is quickly becoming one of the funniest and most easily recognizable actors in television and film- and he made a big splash at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. Ansari’s hilarity usually eclipses the fact that Aziz Ansari is also one of the better-dressed actors out there. No one will argue with Ansari’s sense of style, now that the 2013 Golden Globe Awards are over, as he was one of the best-dressed men to walk the red carpet. Sleek and sophisticated, Ansari’s appearance put to rest any notion that he doesn’t know how to take life seriously and dress the part. Here are a few things that helped Ansari to stand out, all of which are worth taking into consideration if you’re interested in fashion.

The Perfect Dinner Suit
A dinner suit that truly works can be one of the best investments that a man can make in regards to world class style. Ansari made a wise choice with a Dior Homme peak dinner suit that featured a single-button enclosure. The joke Ansari kept telling throughout the night was that his ensemble was designed by Christian Dior’s lesser known brother Kevin Dior, which certainly got a few laughs. The black buttons on his dress shirt, for example, coordinated perfectly with the Dior dinner suit. It didn’t hurt that he chose the best possible black bow tie to pair with this ensemble which was relatively wide. Accents like this can make or break an ensemble, and in this case they were great choices.

Getting the Look
Getting Ansari’s look doesn’t have to be difficult, and you don’t need to have a dinner suit designed by Dior Homme to do so. First, be sure you have a good tailor on your side, as you’ll want a slim-fitting ensemble if you’re going to go for this look. Choose a similar, yet affordable dinner suit and you’ll realize it can last you years if properly cared for. Finally, don’t forget to add a few accents to your look, so that you stand out as being uniquely you.

You’ve got to have a similar physique to Lewis if you want to get his look from the 2013 Golden Globes. After all, not everyone can pull off a slim-fit Burberry jacket the way he did. If you have a lean frame, shop for designers that specialize in slim (aka European) cut, modern tailoring. You’ll do especially well if you have a similar hair color!
